Asher Kai Thane
Asher K. Thane
New York, NY
Asher Kai Thane was born into a life of luxury. While his father, Oliver Thane, was the “spare” instead of the “heir” of his father’s multi-million dollar company, he was treated as with the respect and payroll that made the blow less harsh. Asher’s mother had been hand-picked by his grandfather to ensure the family would carry the right specifications to the next generation. She would have to hold a high enough status, have enough beauty, and a family background that would allow her genetics to produce a strong enough boy for the werewolf gene he would be forced to trigger. Oliver, who was always in his brother’s shadow, readily agreed to take a wife and produce a son while his older brother Viktor shied away from marriage. Thus Jane entered the picture, a woman from another high class werewolf family. Not the prettiest candidate, but Oliver knew his father would save those for his brother.
The couple wasted no time producing an heir, and within the first two months of their marriage Jane was pregnant with the son that would be Asher. He came screaming into the world a healthy baby boy. When Asher was three things looked up for his small family unit. Viktor had been disinherited and Oliver was made heir to the family company. It was the only time his father would ever be happy in young Asher’s life. It didn’t last. Three years later, at Asher’s aunt’s death, his father was once again cast into the shadows as Viktor gave up his past life and they labeled it a “rebellious phase.”
Asher’s life was filled being raised by nannies and being allowed to do as he wished. Humans meant nothing to his family, so whenever he claimed a nanny was being hostile to him, she was quickly fired. This ranged from things as small as not allowing him dessert to spanking the boy. As a result he grew up very cocky and believing he could have everything he wanted. Almost.
His father was a very bitter man, making sure to let Asher know he if ever wanted to climb from the “spare” shadows he would have to force his way up. He would have to be smart and manipulative. He taught the child to strategize and how to keep three steps ahead of your enemy at all times. He also taught him his enemy was sometimes his friend, and that it was okay to show one face in public but a completely different face behind closed doors.
Another lesson he learned from his father that would shape him later in life was that you didn’t have to be faithful to your wife. His father had mistresses kept in the dark from the public eye all throughout Asher’s life. His mother knew, but she had known her job was to provide a child and a dutiful loving wife in public. If his father had needs she would take care of them, and if she couldn’t fulfill them, he was expected to find them elsewhere.
At sixteen Asher triggered his curse, as everyone in his family did at that age. His father arranged a regular person with no family or connections to be kidnapped and taken out to the woods. Asher was given a gun and told to shoot the man, which he promptly did. He didn’t see it as killing a person. The sixteen year old saw it as getting rid of filth and taking his birthright like the rest of his family. Instead of sorrow, it brought him great pride to kill the man.
Because of his upbringing Asher is very cocky. He is more than a bit of a flirt and enjoys having a good time. While on one hand he has positive traits, he also has negative. He’s grow up very bitter about his rank, very manipulative, and a bit two faced. All of which he hides in the sneaky actions he’s learned to do.
When Asher was eighteen, his father set him up in an arranged relationship with another elite werewolf family’s daughter. Abigail Horwits was a bit rebellious, but his family had shown they could take care of it. Asher thought she was a pretty face and a way for him to advance to a higher place, so he readily agreed. When she threw resistance, he made a promise he had full intentions of keeping, but couldn’t. He promised the girl he would find a way out of them having to marry, and when he went to fight his father about it he went expecting to be disowned at worst. He was a smart kid, and he knew given the right circumstances he would be able to make it work in the end for his goal. What he didn’t expect was the threat his father placed on him.
Asher found out very quickly that the supposed love his father had for him stopped if he wasn’t being useful. When he said he refused to marry the girl and threatened to leave, Oliver laughed in his face. Oliver told his son if he refused this marriage he would be disowned, and it wouldn’t stop there. Should Asher find love, he would ensure that whomever it was, was killed. When Asher laughed and said he wouldn’t be the fool to fall in love, his father told him he would do the same to any friends the boy would make, and in the end all the blood would be on his hands. To validate his point, his showed the teen files that had once been made to assassinate the woman Viktor had loved, as well as the child they’d had. It hadn’t been needed due to life’s unfortunate circumstances, but there they were clear as day. Asher held his grown, although disturbed on the inside, claiming he would find no friends. Instead his father turned and threatened the same to Abigail, and what little friendship he had struck with her disallowed him from fighting this fight anymore and he instead gave up.
The next time he saw Abigail, he played it off as though it were nothing. He’d said he’d tried but it hadn’t worked, and had never gone further. She had most likely thought he was lying, especially with how calm he kept himself on the outside. He took her rage and her anger, knowing he had done his best to keep her sanity where it was. During their engagement he tried his best to let her out, to try and teach her how he’d managed to both party hard and stay out of the public eye so no anger would come from their parents, but his efforts to try and allow her a sense of peace were generally seen with backlash as he still seemed the obedient puppy. He wouldn’t tell her that these were all things he was trying to do in order to prevent her from being miserable since he failed his promise. It was the one thing Asher had always done up until then and after that. If he promised someone, made the oath with the words “I promise” he always carried through. A personal validating, and it killed him to have failed her, but he felt as though his hands were tied.
Luckily she found her own way out. He would never admit it to anyone, but he was glad she had. She went missing, and he got off the hook of marrying anyone. The next few years after that were interesting. Still struggling with a hidden pill addiction, that he didn’t see as a problem, he was shipped to college to try and be seen as a model young adult. There were very few classes he actually attended, and risked failing out after his first semester. It wasn’t that he wasn’t intelligent, it was that nothing interested him and he didn’t want to be there in the first place. A combination of a philosophy class and an elective history class changed his views, and drew him in his second semester. With these two classes the gears in his brain began to turn, and he found those revolutionary ideas of his he’d had his entire life of “changing the way the ruling class of werewolves” ran things could actually work, if he was smart about it. With these ideas in mind the werewolf began plotting how to overthrow the system, first deciding he would have to become a part of the system to stab it in the back. While not pleasant, his gave up his pills and continued through with college. Whilst doing so he began to look for chinks in the solid armor of those he grew up with, and found weak points all around. The 21 year old finished his degree early, doubling up on classes and taking all he could during the summer, and whilst his degree in philosophy would never land him a job outside his family, he didn’t need it. He just needed the recognition that came with it. More luck would come when Abigail contacted him after all these years.
